Happy New Year everyone!
I could not be happier welcoming 2017! This past year was a tough one and I am relieved to be saying goodbye to it. I thought it was just me who felt down about 2016, but the more I talked to people about it, the more I realized it seemed to be a bad year for everyone.
It wasn’t just personal reasons, look at the election, could things have been worse? I was born in Pakistan but I have spent most of my life here in the U.S and I have always thought that no matter where we stand now, this country is improving and we are taking steps to move forward. The presidential election of 2016 proved me wrong. It’s been a few months, but I am still just in utter disbelief that the “open-minded” people of this country would elect an ignorant, misogynistic, racist excuse of man lead this nation. I am going to stop my self right here and to avoid going into a rant about politics 😛 .
Despite it all, things are looking up for 2017. It’s been a few months but I have settled into my new job which I absolutely LOVE. I am in media and I get to do digital marketing for many businesses that I grew up hearing about, not to mention that I work with the nicest group of people and have a wonderful office. To enjoy this and to make sure that I start off this year on a positive note I made a decision that many digital marketing people could never dream of, unplugging.
We’ve all heard the debate a million times, everyone’s always on their screens and real human contact is becoming non existent, but on the other hand, we don’t have a choice because that’s where society is headed and we need to go with it or we will fall behind. Trust me, I get it. However, the more I thought about, the more I realized how anxious it makes me when my phone lights up and I have the need to reply right away. It’s a small thing and we may not realize it, but our minds and body use up unnecessary energy in these little “worries.” So I thought to myself what would be the best way to tackle this and I arrived at a happy medium.
I texted/messaged all of my close friends and the group chats i’m in and told them straight up, that I wanted to begin this year by being in a positive state of mind and in order to focus on that, I’ve decided not to be constantly messaging or on my phone. If there is an emergency, feel free to text but not to just start up conversation. Save the real conversations for when we meet or for the friends that live far, Face time.
After actively doing for this for about two weeks, I can tell you that this is one of the best decisions I have made. When I meet up with friends, we have so much to talk about since we aren’t getting constant updates, and we can share our stories getting real time reactions. The anxiety to reply right away has disappeared. I did not realize how much of a burden that felt like before it was gone. I still post things on Snap chat and Instagram but without the constant pressure to reply to messages. I have finally found a happy medium to stay unplugged but not fall behind. I encourage you to try doing this for a week and see how it goes! Trust me, its worth a try!
Looking forward to all the positiveness this year will bring to all of our lives iA!
-Until next time
